History
Constructed in 1885, the building was used as an auxiliary facility of Ljubljana’s tobacco factory. It primarily housed a washroom for workers, equipped with showers and bathtubs. During the 1970s, the building was converted into a factory canteen and in the early 1990s into the factory’s archives. Following its renovation, the tobacco factory Tobačna Ljubljana placed the building at the disposal of the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana.
The Tobacco 001 Cultural Centre encompasses exhibition grounds, a small museum collection and an apartment for artists-in-residence. It is housed in the first renovated historical building within the complex of the former Ljubljana’s tobacco factory. The new centre for visual and cultural activities opened in 2011, in a quarter of the city that is increasingly becoming the focal point for contemporary multicultural contents.
Collection
The collection is placed in movable glass display cases exhibiting photographs, cigarette boxes, cigarette cases, porcelain pipes and other smoking accessories. The three-ton cigarette-making machine that greets the visitors at the museum’s entrance once produced one of the most recognisable cigarette brands in the former Yugoslavia – Filter 57, the first filtered cigarette.
